Insiders say Melvin believed he would be the one to lead the conversation, especially given his role on the show. 

Instead, the interview went to Hoda Kotb, a decision that reportedly caught him off guard. 

One source told the Daily Mail, “Craig is absolutely devastated he didn’t get that interview,” adding that he saw it as an opportunity to step further into his role.

According to the source, the disappointment went deeper than simply missing out. “He wasn’t just passed over — he wasn’t even asked. That’s what really stings,” the insider said. 

For Melvin, who has been part of the show since 2018, the moment was seen as a chance to solidify his standing, one that never materialized.

Sources say the situation has shaken his confidence, with one noting, “The rug was pulled out from under him. He went from confident to uncertain overnight.” 

Others described the shift as deeper than disappointment, calling it not just “disappointment” but “doubt.”

“This has shaken him,” an insider shared. “There’s growing concern behind the scenes. If he’s not getting interviews like this, where does he really stand?”

A “Today” source, however, pushed back slightly, saying Melvin was “looped in” and in full support of Kotb’s interview with Savannah.  

“Right now, Craig’s future feels very much up in the air,” the insider added, further describing it as a “tough place to be.”

At the center of the story is Savannah Guthrie’s deeply personal loss. Her 84-year-old mother was taken from her Tucson, Arizona, home on February 1, and the case remains unsolved. 

During the interview, the journalist opened up about the emotional toll, admitting she is haunted nightly by thoughts of what her mother endured.

“We are in agony. It is unbearable. And to think of what she went through. I wake up every night in the middle of the night, every night. And in the darkness, I imagine her terror,” she said in a clip from the interview.

Despite the pain, Savannah emphasized that she is holding onto hope. “Someone needs to do the right thing,” she said, while also sharing that she still believes her mother will be found. 

Her colleagues reacted emotionally, with Carson Daly describing the situation as “gut-wrenching” as the search continues with no arrests or confirmed leads.

Savannah Guthrie Balances Return To TV Amid Ongoing Investigation

Savannah has largely remained in Arizona since her mother’s disappearance, supporting the search and staying close to family. 

She only recently returned to the New York studio, where she addressed her path forward during the interview.

“I wanted you to know that I’m still standing, and I still have hope,” she said. “And I don’t know what version of me that will be, but it will be.”

Meanwhile, the investigation into Nancy’s disappearance continues under Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos, who has faced scrutiny over the lack of progress. 

He stated he has “no regrets” about how the case has been handled.

In an effort to generate leads, the Guthrie family has announced a $1 million reward for information that leads to Nancy’s return. At the same time, the FBI has also offered $100,000 for information that could help bring her home.
